2:44 AM
When Intel first came to Chandler, it didn?t just open a factory ? it opened the door to the city?s future. The locations of new freeways, upscale retail centers and luxury housing subdivisions can all be traced in part to the microchip manufacturing giant, its two Chandler campuses and its nearly 10,000 highly paid, highly educated work force.Mike Amedeo has been with Intel 25 years and remembers when the company first built its Chandler Boulevard facility. He was in charge of planning the groundbreaking ceremony with then-Gov. Bruce Babbitt "in the middle of nowhere," he said."And now there?s $400,000 houses across the street," he said.Back then, many Chandler residents welcomed the manufacturing operation. Business owners saw Intel employees as customers to be enticed by discounts offered whenever a store clerk saw an employee?s ID badge."They would say ?Oh, you?re with Intel? You get a discount,?
