Lib backbencher wants ID cards to fight terror
2:00 AM
A national identity card should be introduced to help the fight against terrorism, a federal backbencher says.Liberal MP Jason Wood, who served in the Victorian police force for more than a decade, says a national ID card would help overcome the limitations of state-based law enforcement systems. The government is divided over Prime Minister John Howard's decision to put a national ID card back on the agenda, 18 years after a Labor plan for a similar card was quashed.Mr Wood said a national card would be attached to a national database, whereas existing crime fighting systems were state-based and did not interact.

Hand in hand: ID card and a Bill of Rights
2:01 AM
An Australian identity card system may be a good idea, but only if it is accompanied by increasing human rights protections. To adopt the former, without the latter, would be to undermine democratic freedoms. There are some compelling arguments in favour of a national ID card system in Australia. At a very practical level, it would end, for example, the inefficient absurdity of Australians having to comply with the ?ten point? test to open a bank account. The test where you need your passport, drivers licence, and a power or telephone bill that verifies your address. And it would reduce the inconvenience, particularly to elderly and ill Australians, of having to search for both their Medicare and pensioner concession card when they go to the doctor. It might also reduce the impact of identity theft which currently costs Australians around $6 billion a year.

Opposition to ID card plans 'gathers pace'
1:12 AM
OPPOSITION to government plans for ID cards is growing, campaigners have claimed.More than 10,000 people have now registered their stand against ID cards with the campaign group No2ID.The group had appealed for 10,000 signatures by October 9 and for each signatory to pledge £10 for a legal defence fund.Supporters claimed achieving the target months ahead of schedule proved the growing scepticism and unease with the proposals. And Scottish Green MSP Patrick Harvie urged people to continue signing the pledge of opposition to the cards.

National ID card system to undergo scrutiny by states
1:14 AM
Gov. Tom Vilsack says the true cost of implementing a national ID card system in Iowa and other states won't be known until several questions regarding the program get answered from the federal government.Costs for training and security at drivers license facilities are among the unanswered questions that surround the REAL ID Act, a measure Congress recently passed as an amendment to a federal bill."These are questions that are unanswered and therefore it's difficult to assess exactly how much it will cost," Vilsack said during an interview Tuesday. "It's fairly clear it's going to cost more than the current system. If it does it's likely the states will pass that cost onto drivers and that will in turn result in higher costs for drivers licenses."

Police: ID cards not enough
1:16 AM
AN Australia Card was not a "silver bullet" to defeat home-grown terrorists, according to the peak police union.Jim Torr, the chief executive officer of the Australian Federal Police Association, said the ID card should be on the agenda, but would do nothing to combat terrorism or other crimes unless it was part of much wider changes. Mr Torr said his association had been calling for a 10-year national strategic counter-terrorism plan since September 11, 2001."That hasn't happened and we just lurch on from year to year," he said.

Beattie puts forward case for Australia Card
1:17 AM
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has reopened the Australia Card debate - and this time, with the support of the Prime Minister. Mr Beattie says he thinks an ID system is necessary in dealing with international terrorism.PETER BEATTIE: Not to me it doesn't. Why don't we have it? I suggested a number of those things in the past and this debate has been around since 1987 and it simply won't go away and as I said, if you consider just some of the issues I've talked about - what happened with Cornelia Rau, for example? What's happening in terrorism, I think as well as identity theft, all those things can in my view be dealt with in part at least with having a national ID card system. We all have a tax file number anyway and if anybody thinks there aren't obviously things like credit checks on their ability when they come to borrow money, they're kidding themselves. An ID card system - if somebody has nothing to hide it's not a problem. Yes we need safeguards, people need to access their records to check what's kept on them is accurate and fair.
