State suspends medical marijuana ID card system
1:28 AM
Concerned that the state could be aiding a federal crime, the California Department of Health Services on Friday suspended a fledgling program that issues identification cards to medical marijuana users. The cards are supposed to help medical pot users avoid arrest after their doctors have prescribed marijuana for pain relief, which is legal under California's Compassionate Use Act.But the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last month that federal authorities can ignore state medical marijuana statutes and enforce federal drug laws against people who use pot to ease pain.

Tight schedule will collapse UK ID cards
1:14 AM
The Government seems set to make the classic project management mistake of setting the work schedule before anybody has seriously looked at what the proposed biometric identity system will actually do.If Government plans are realised, the ID system will roll out for its first live use in 2007. This is only eighteen months away. Most companies allow more time for planning and executing an office move, let alone embarking on a hugely complex project commissioned by a department with less than exemplary experience in IT management.Edward Leigh, chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, the Commons financial watchdog, said: "Given the Government's track-record in this area, it is extremely problematic whether they have any hope of developing this project on time or to budget."

Perdue announces driver services initiatives
1:16 AM
Gov. Sonny Perdue visited the Sandy Springs Customer Service Center (CSC) of the new Department of Driver Services (DDS) to announce several new initiatives that will improve customer service for Georgia motorists.?Once these customer service initiatives are put into place, I want Georgians to say their experience getting a drivers license was a pleasure,? Perdue said. ?Efficient business practices and respect for the customer?s time will be the top priority.? DDS is offering indigent citizens with no valid driver?s license a free photo identification card for voting purposes. Documentation needed for a photo identification card is the same that is needed for a drivers license, which can be found on the agency?s Web site. Indigent citizens must apply for cards in person at a DDS CSC.

LSE slams Clarke's ID card "desperation"
1:17 AM
The London School of Economics (LSE) has said the response of home secretary Charles Clarke to its report on ID cards smacked of "desperation".Mr Clarke described the LSE report, which asked serious questions of the government's plans to introduce biometric ID cards, as a "technically incompetent piece of work".But as the legislation that will bring about a national ID card system enters its committee stage, the row rumbled on with one of the report's authors, Simon Davies, criticising the home secretary's comments.

ID card support 'dwindling'
1:19 AM
Support for identity cards has slumped dramatically since the Government tabled legislation to introduce them, according to a YouGov survey in the Daily Telegraph. It suggests that backing for the controversial cards now stands at just 45% - well down on the 78% who backed them in a similar survey in 2003.Opponents have long argued that the widespread public support cited by Home Secretary Charles Clarke is volatile and will ebb away as the details of the scheme are discussed. The survey also indicates widespread scepticism about the ability of the Government to introduce the highly complex ID card system smoothly, and little willingness to pay more than a token sum for a card.Just 10% of those questioned said they expected the system to be introduced efficiently, against 84% who said it would bring "disruption and inconvenience".

ID cards to be required for students and staff
1:19 AM
Officials of Starpoint Central Schools have set up a photo identification card system to keep unauthorized people out of school buildings.School Superintendent C. Douglas Whelan said the district used $4,000 of a $100,000 federal Emergency Response Grant to buy equipment to make the ID cards. Administrators, teachers, noninstructional employees, volunteers, students and visitors will have to wear them on school property. "Students from third through 12th grade will have to wear them when school opens again," Whelan said last week. "Fricano Primary School students won't have to."School Board members were issued their badges Monday, Whelan said, "and administrators got theirs about a week earlier. Teachers and other staff members will be given their school ID cards when school resumes in September," he said.
