Scottish wildcard turfs out Henman
2:58 AM
IT has become a Wimbledon tradition, as predictable as strawberries drizzled in cream.Deprived of a champion since 1936, Great Britain annually pins its hopes on trusty old Tim Henman, who drags the entire nation with him through excruciatingly long matches, clawing his way into the second week, only to come up short. When he saw footage of his mother Judy, a former Scottish champion tennis player, leaping with joy at his victory, he said: "Oh, there's my mum making an idiot of herself."Scolded by the interviewer, and reminded that it was his mother who found his lost Wimbledon ID badge on Wednesday, he said: "No, it was her who misplaced it. I am quite messy and she tidies after me, and puts my things in the wrong place all the time."

Manchester Airport and Department for Transport trial biometrics with Human Recognition Systems
3:00 AM
Human Recognition Systems, the only independent multi-biometric systems integrator in the UK, have just commenced a trial of biometric technology for staff access control, officially sponsored by Manchester Airport and the Department for Transport. The trial is aimed at assessing the practical use and user acceptance levels of biometric technology specifically in an airport environment. The technologies on trial include iris recognition from Panasonic and hand geometry recognition from Recognition Systems Inc.The two systems are running in conjunction with a photo ID system which presents a photo of an individual every time they present themselves to a biometric reader. A system administrator then manually checks that the individuals photo is correct and records a valid match. Both manual and system logs record several data sets including false accept rates, false reject rates and transaction speed times.

Of birders and boaters
2:09 AM
Birdwatchers thought the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel's plan to ban birdwatchers from the bridge-tunnel's islands was for the birds. So they got involved and helped hammer out a new policy that will keep the man-made islands open. During the spring and fall, they can be among the best places to spot migrating species that can't be seen anywhere else in this area. But if some rare species is sighted, there will be no spontaneous running out to see it: Birdwatchers must make arrangements well in advance, provide government-issued photo identification, pay $50 per hour for a security escort, and be willing to have their vehicles, belongings and persons checked. Researchers and scientists will have to obtain and pay for annual passes that will require background checks and references.

Lose your ID? You might be grounded
2:10 AM
Michelle Bearden's weekend jaunt to Phoenix last month started with a smashed rental car window and stolen purse, took a sharp turn into a bewildering maze of contradictory information and culminated in a predawn trip to the Phoenix airport in a last-ditch effort to talk herself onto a flight she had been told she would not be allowed to board. The problem: When thieves snatched her purse, they also stole her identification.
