ID Cards Could Cost £18 Billion over Ten Years
The introduction of identity cards could cost Britain up to £18 billion over the next decade ? more than three times the Government?s estimate ? according to an expert study revealed today. The price-tag, calculated by a team at the London School of Economics, would mean individuals having to pay around £300 a head to buy ID cards, unless the Government was willing to step in and pick up part of the cost.At present, the Home Office predicts the total cost of running the scheme, in conjunction with a new biometric passport system, over the next 10 years will come to £5.8 billion.Because the Treasury insists the scheme must be self-financing, holders are expected to be required to pay £93 each for their card.

Trans-Atlantic ID card system
Th3P0stalDud3 writes "The Independent is reporting that the U.S. has asked the U.K. to use the same chips in their proposed identity cards as the ones in our proposed identity card. In effect, creating a trans-atlantic ID card system." From the article: "The aim of getting the same microchip is to ensure compatability in screening terrorist suspects. But it will also mean that information contained in the British cards can be accessed across the Atlantic."

Statewide medical pot ID system in place locally
Mendocino County's new state-approved medical marijuana ID card is now available. The Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved fees for the program at $50 for each ID card and $50 for each caregiver ID card with discounts for MediCal patients.Mendocino County is one of a handful of state counties chosen to pilot the new statewide ID card system, which will put the county Health Department fully in charge and remove the county Sheriff's Department from the equation."I strongly support this statewide ID program so everyone's on the same page," said Sheriff Tony Craver at the meeting. He stressed that medical marijuana ID cards, which he pioneered with DA Norm Vroman several years ago in this county, save lots of money in investigative time for deputies and detainment time for legitimate medical marijuana users. He called the benefits "immeasurable."

Security loopholes in biggest ever biometric register
The government's planned ID card system should be prepared to be compromised by fraudsters and criminals from the outset, experts claimed yesterday. While Labour is keen to trumpet the secure nature of its proposed national identity card, security experts believe the system is likely to be broken into by organised crime. As it is currently proposed, the ID card will contain three pieces of biometric data taken from individuals: fingerprint, face and a scan of the iris.Unlike current photo ID cards, there will be no point in making a fake biometric card without it being linked to a record on the national computer database. But while it will be difficult to steal someone else's biometric data, it is not completely impossible to spoof a victim's iris pattern or fingerprint.

Airline security may require date of birth
Canadian travellers may soon have to provide their birthdate before boarding an airplane as a measure to help screen out possible terrorists.National security adviser William Elliott says knowing when a person was born is one of the best ways for officials to match a passenger with a name on a watch list.Mr. Elliott, who provides advice to the prime minister, says the government is wrestling with the privacy implications of requiring people to hand over the information.Currently some airlines demand photo identification from passengers, but it is not mandatory. And it may not include the person's birthdate.

By fall 2006, DMV to verify photographs
Renewing a Virginia driver's license soon will mean returning home with paperwork, then waiting for the actual photo identification card to arrive in the mail to ensure that drivers are who they say they are.The change, which is to take effect by fall 2006, is aimed at thwarting people who use false names and addresses to obtain more than one license or ID card. It also will let the Department of Motor Vehicles implement the technical means to manage increasing amounts of digitized information regularly used by state and federal law enforcement agencies.DMV has been tightening its security requirements following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Seven of the 19 hijackers had valid Virginia identification cards obtained through loopholes DMV has been working to close.

ID badges won't work
I was reading the article Thursday on tracking school buses and I think that is a great idea. And although tracking individual students may keep them safe, it is very likely to end up not working.First, children will probably lose their ID badges or discard them. If this happens, they may not be able to ride the bus. This could cause difficulty with parents who work.Second, some children sometimes go home with other children on different buses. Would they be allowed to ride these buses? This could cause problems for certain students.Third, children might be uncomfortable wearing these tags. Were would they keep the badges when not riding the bus? Children would be teased about wearing them. And I don't think they'd keep them in good condition.
