Governor vetoes limits on ID cards
2:37 AM
Gov. Janet Napolitano on Friday vetoed a bill that would have banned state and local governments from accepting Mexico-issued ID cards and all other foreign identification documents, such as passports.Senate Bill 1511, which targeted the more than 102,000 Mexicans carrying the matricula consular cards in Arizona, would have required public entities to accept only IDs issued by Arizona, the federal government or an Indian tribe."Under this standard, no foreign government-issued documents - even passports - could be accepted or recognized by state and local government or law enforcement officials," Napolitano said in her veto letter to lawmakers.

ID cards may test Blair's reduced majority
2:38 AM
The government's controversial identity cards plan looks set to be one of the first tests of Prime Minister Tony Blair's vastly reduced majority after leading the Labour Party to victory in a third successive General Election. The majority - down from 166 seats in 2001 to a likely 66 seats as predicted by silicon.com the week before the election - means that any renewed opposition to the ID cards proposal could lead to the bill being watered down or voted down. The Identity Cards Bill was passed by 224 votes to 64 in its third reading in the House of Commons but scrapped by the government before it reached the House of Lords after running out of legislative time before the election.

UN blocks Taiwanese journalists
