Doyle vetoes voter photo ID bill
Gov. Jim Doyle vetoed a plan to require voters to show government-issued photo identification, saying Friday the requirement would disenfranchise poor and elderly voters who lack IDs.The governor?s veto came three days after Republicans hand-delivered the bill to Doyle?s office as they urged him to sign a law they said would improve the integrity of Wisconsin elections. Doyle?s office sent notice of the veto after 5 p.m.Assembly Speaker John Gard, R-Peshtigo, blasted the timing, saying it shows that Doyle is ?trying to hide from an issue that has more than 80 percent popular support in the state of Wisconsin.?

Free online tool enables anonymous evaluation of your card system security
How secure is your ID card system? Fargo Electronics wants to help you find out. They have developed a series of self-assessment questions that will help card managers determine the gaps in their ?supposedly? secure ID cards. This non-proprietary interactive website tool was launched in April."We felt there was an awareness that needed to be driven home," said Joe Wright, Fargo's marketing director. "We wanted to make end users realize their vulnerabilities."

One article they won't strip off: badges
Exotic dancers could soon be required to wear city-issued ID badges , now that operators of topless bars and nude clubs have agreed in federal court to comply with a "human display" ordinance that was clarified in out-of-court talks.Without disclosing the dancer's name, an ID number and photo will be shown on the badges, according to a pact that averted trial of the clubs' two-year lawsuit against the city.Monday, clubs including Allstars, PT's, Sugar's, Palace Men's Club and Babes informed U.S. District Judge Fred Biery they would comply with the ordinance. The tougher rules were sought by nearby residents who claimed the businesses attract criminal activity.

7900 register for HIS in Gushegu/Karaga
About 7,900 people from the informal sector in the Gushegu/Karaga District have registered to benefit from the National Health Insurance Scheme.Mr Abdulai Yakubu, Gushegu/Karaga District Manager of the Scheme announced this on Tuesday during a People's Assembly held in the newly created Karaga District.Mr Yakubu said the contribution of the registered persons yielded about 12 million cedis and expressed the hope that the District would meet the government deadline in June.He said the Identification (ID) Card photo taking exercise would start very soon and appealed to those who have not yet registered to do so to ensure that they were not left out.

Refugees, asylum seekers to get ID cards
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative in Botswana has explained that problems encountered during the identification process of refugees or political asylum seekers has made it imperative to issue them with identity cards.Benny Otim told BOPA in an interview that for the first time in Botswana, the Office of the President in collaboration with UNHCR will register and issue identity cards to all refugees, including rejected cases and asylum seekers in Botswana.

Airport head says ID costs unrealistic
The man who heads the Tamworth airport says councils are having to bear the cost and administrative burden of issuing new aviation security identification (ID) passes.The photo ID cards are now required at all airports with regular passenger services.Many airport operators are regional councils who say they face big costs and may possibly have to employ an extra staff member just to administer the card system.

Reyes says numbers, not ID system, better
LOCAL Government Secretary Angelo Reyes said a national reference number system would prove more effective and less controversial for the National Government than the national ID system.In a dialogue with members of the local media in last Thursday evening's 55th induction of officers of the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC), Reyes said the way he understands it, an executive issuance won't suffice for the creation of an ID system in the country.
