A million teenagers carry ID

One million teenagers are already carrying government-backed identity cards, it emerged yesterday.The CitizenCard, an identity scheme set up by a non-profit company and supported by the Home Office, is held by one in 10 of the country's teenagers and generally used to provide proof of age.The scheme could also help soften public attitudes toward the Government's biometric ID card Bill, according to Liberty. The CitizenCard is Britain's largest photo ID card scheme and is available to adults as well as young people. It costs £9, with a £3 concession for under-18s.

Nearly 5,000 new student IDs issued in three days

New photo-ID cards were issued to 4,963 Western Michigan University students at Lawson Arena through Thursday--the first three days of a two-week campaign to get new cards in the hands of as many students as possible.Everything has been running smoothly, according to Bob Coffman of WMU's Department of Public Safety, who is directing the card processing. "Most students are in and out with their new card in 10 minutes or less," says Coffman.

Court building security discussed

Officials of every branch of the city's criminal justice system gathered Wednesday for the first of a series of meetings to talk about immediate and long-term ways to make Criminal District Court more secure.Jordan, who was U.S. attorney here before being elected district attorney, said he would like to explore the feasibility of requiring Criminal District Court visitors to supply photo identification before entering, a system long in use at U.S. District Court.

Senate OKs organ donor symbol on state ID cards

Legislation approved Tuesday by the state Senate would require that potential organ donors be identified by a heart symbol on the front of their driver's licenses or state ID cards.
Would-be donors now sign a statement on the backs of the cards saying they would like to donate. But supporters said that over time the signed statement can wear off or become smudged, making the information illegible.

Minnesota is no stranger to school shootings. In the last ten years, at least five incidents involving guns have been reported on school property in that state alone.In 1992, there were 3.4 million crimes against students in schools.By 2002, that number dropped to 1.7 million and the majority of those crimes were non-violent; most were thefts.Authorities say the decrease is largely due to schools taking a serious look at security after the attack at Colorado's Columbine High School.They started locking side doors, remodeled buildings to get a better view of who was coming in and out and required students to wear ID badges .

Minister stands firm on ID cards

The government is determined to press ahead with its plans to introduce a national ID card system, Home Office minister Baroness Scotland has said.Having a "clear, unequivocal and unique form of identification" offered clear benefits, she told peers as she opened the second reading debate on the Bill.The Lib Dems oppose the plans on civil liberties grounds, and the Tories have criticised the detail of the plans.
