Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201, Personal Identity Verification (PIV) of Federal Employees and Contractors, is a result of last year's Homeland Security Presidential Directive calling for a mandatory, government-wide personal identification standard. The PIV card, the heart of the identification system, is about the size of a credit card and will contain integrated chips for storing electronic information, a personal ID number, a photo and two electronically stored fingerprints.

Mercado: Will anonymity, mobility be curbed by ID card?
LIKE the proposed divorce law, the proposal for a national ID card system will bog down in endless controversy.I am disinclined against it because it will affect filial relations and domestic travel.Family gatherings and traditional reunions will not be complete with the understandable absence of distant relatives who are in underground movement. Unless one is privy to the membership of your "kamag-anak" in various kilusan groups, it will be difficult to distinguish one cousin who is an NPA from another who is an RHB and other germane kin who are either in the bastardized HMB or RGA without their ID cards.

LYNN-Having a school picture taken each year could end up saving your child's life.Smile Safe Kids is a program that is new to Lynn and has aided in the recovery of at least two missing children in the United States since it was launched nationally in October. The program was created through a partnership between the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Lifetouch Portraits, which handles school pictures in all of Lynn's public schools and most of the city's private schools. In conjunction with their child's prints, parents receive complimentary identification cards used to facilitate the process of finding a missing child. The cards include a photo of the child, the child's name, school and grade, instructions on what to do if a child goes missing and a series of codes to help authorities access the child's profile.

Senate advances bill to require photo ID at polls
Voters would be required to show a driver's license or other government-issued photo identification at polling places under a bill passed Monday by the state Senate.Democrats said the requirement could discourage some people from voting, but Republicans said it would give voters confidence. The Senate voted 31-17 along party lines to advance the bill, which will now move to the House for consideration.Requiring voters to show a driver's license, federal photo ID or passport would prevent people from coming into the same polling place and voting more than once under different names, said Sen. Victor Heinold, R-Valparaiso. That would give voters more faith in elections, Republicans said.
