Capital secretariat issues new and improved civilian IDs

A new ?electronic ID? project is expected to be launched in three districts of the capital by Mayor of Sana?a Ahmed Al-Kohlani and Brig. Rashid Jarhoum, head of the Civil Status Department.The step is part of a broader plan to replace old ID cards with new ones. The three areas included in the project are Sha'oub, Al-Tahreer and Ma'in.Jarhoum told the Observer that the new IDs will help the government create a workable database of Yemeni citizens.

Bangladesh to introduce ID card system

Bangladesh plans to introduce for its citizens a multipurpose national identity card with photograph and fingerprints.State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar told parliament that work on the project would start from next year, the Daily Star reported Friday. The cards would be issued after gathering information on every individual. The information would be preserved in a national database.The database would help law-enforcing agencies combat crime as it would give them instant access to the information preserved in it, officials here said.

School stops using radio frequency ID badges to track students

A grade school outside Sacramento has stopped keeping track of its students by making them wear radio frequency I-D badges. The superintendent and principal of Brittan Elementary School in Sutter says the school was forced to stop using the badges when the company that developed the technology pulled out.The program was introduced nearly a month ago by the school as a way to simplify attendance-taking and potentially reduce vandalism.

SCHOOL CLARIFIES ID BADGE 'GRADING'

Members of the high school's School Based Improvement Team said Tuesday that rumors about students being given zeros on test scores solely for not having their ID badges were false.But teachers can give a zero grade for class participation if a student does not have his or her ID.During a meeting Tuesday night, Judy Sultz, a parent of a student at Stonington High School, said her daughter has been telling her that teachers are giving zeros for not having ID badges.

CCTV could be matched to ID data

Police could be given access to biometric photographs of the population to perform automatic matches against CCTV footage of suspected criminals, it emerged last week as MPs debated the ID Cards Bill.The disclosure has prompted calls from opposition MPs for controls to be introduced to the bill to regulate how police databases are linked to the ID card system national identity register."The national identity register will hand the police a database of high-quality images of every adult in the UK. By the time the ID cards become compulsory, the police, in theory, will have it in their power to identify everyone filmed on CCTV through automated checks," said Liberal Democrat MP Richard Allen.

What price, Real ID?

Declan McCullagh has a detailed piece on the Real ID legislation that just passed the US House. The legislation would effectively force the States to meet certain requirements if they expect their driver's licenses to be used as IDs for federal purposes--like getting on an airplane. I've been watching for this every since I was CIO for Utah. This is a big step for the U.S. because it creates what amounts to the first national ID card system .Opponents are quick to point out the privacy concerns--and there are plenty. Also, there is always some sensitivity to Congress creating "unfunded mandates" for the States. I have to admit, the privacy concerns scare me, but having seen the sausage being made, as it were, I also see the logic behind the action.
