Some voter ID cards missing their mark
9:34 PM
Alabama Secretary of State Nancy Worley mailed out over 24,400 voter identification cards yesterday to voters registered in Chilton County in hopes of updating the information in her office. However, bad addresses and mail mix-ups are preventing a handful of registered voters from re-identifying themselves."I've gotten three phone calls this week from registered voters who haven't received their cards," said Chilton County Registrar Bill Popwell. "If they hadn't called, that's three people who would have had to vote on a provisional ballot come the next election."Popwell doubts those are the only three people in the county that have had this problem and asked that anyone that hasn't gotten a postcard in the mail to call his office.

Parents protest student computer ID tags
9:35 PM
The only grade school in this rural town is requiring students to wear radio frequency identification badges that can track their every move. Some parents are outraged, fearing it will take away their children's privacy. The badges introduced at Brittan Elementary School on Jan. 18 rely on the same radio frequency and scanner technology that companies use to track livestock and product inventory. Similar devices have recently been used to monitor youngsters in some parts of Japan. But few American school districts have embraced such a monitoring system, and civil libertarians hope to keep it that way.

Cyber Society embarks on ambitious programme
9:35 PM
To tackle the spate of cyber crimes and educate netizens and stakeholders alike in the right way of utilising the benefits of internet- based technologies, the recently formed Cyber Society of India (CySi) has taken up the task of assisting internet cafes and web publishers in complying with provisions of IT Act 2000 through CyLawCom Audit and Certification programme.
Announcing initiatives at press meet yesterday, Na Vijayashankar alias Naavi, secretary, CySi, said though in Karnataka and Maharashtra there was a legislation that mandated the requirement of photo ID cards to browse the net at cyber cafes, it was found that this provision had impeded easy access to net by common public. 'We should harness the resources of these cafes for public good. Hence, there is a need for educating the owners of cyber outlets. CySi has taken up cyber law compliance (CyLawCom) audit and certification programme for owners to ensure they adopt benchmark guidelines so as to fall in line with due diligence provisions of the IT Act 2000,' Naavi said.

Bill Prompts New National ID Card Fears

Congress is considering legislation that conservatives and libertarians warn will create a national ID card system , calling it a backdoor attempt to remove privacy protections gained in a law passed only last year. The Real ID Act of 2005 (H.R. 418), introduced Jan. 26 by House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), would eliminate existing privacy protections and give the Secretary of Homeland Security expanded powers to control states' driver's licenses and ID cards, and the data collected while issuing them.

Mandatory Student ID Cards Contain RFIDs
9:27 PM
Parents in a northern California public school district and civil liberties groups are urging a school district to terminate the mandatory use of Radio Frequency Identification tags (RFIDs) by students.Several civil liberties groups, including the ACLU of Northern California (ACLU-NC), Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), and the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) sent a letter today expressing alarm at the Brittan School District's use of mandatory ID badges that include a RFID device that tracks the students' movements. The device transmits private information to a computer on campus whenever a student passes under one of the scanners. The ID badges also include the student's name, photo, grade, school name, class year and the four-digit school ID number. Students are required to prominently display the badges by wearing them around the neck at all times.
