Plan one step from ID card

A CIVIL rights group yesterday said a Federal Government plan to introduce a national scheme to fight identity-related crime could lead to a national ID card.Attorney-General Mr Philip Ruddock said the national document verification system was designed to tackle money-laundering, welfare fraud and terrorism and would go on trial across 24 government agencies soon.It would enable Government departments and agencies to check documents, such as birth certificates and passports, online.But there was no need for such a scheme, Australian Civil Liberties Council president Mr Terry OGorman said. ?Its but one step from there to a national ID card system,? Mr OGorman said.

Beware of conmen offering you help

FOLLOWING recent reports of bogus callers operating in the Crosshouse area, East Ayrshire Council has issued a warning for residents to be on their guard.The callers claim to be from Community Alarms and say they are in the area checking smoke detectors.The council is stressing the importance of asking for identification. All legitimate tradesmen and women will have proper ID.Do not let anyone into your home, or even over the doorstep. If anyone appears at your door and claims to be from East Ayrshire Council, remember that the council has recently developed a corporate ID badges which replaces the previously-used individual departmental identification badges. The new system strengthens the council?s ID system and confirms the identity of council employees.

Briefs: Union personalizes ID badges

Union members coming to NYSUT headquarters are getting more personal attention. A computer at the entrance is dedicated to producing individualized name badges for members ? as opposed to generic 'Visitor' badges.The initiative came from New York State United Teachers Secretary-Treasurer Ivan Tiger."A member is not a visitor in this building," Tiger said. "We want people, when they come to their building, to know it's theirs."NYSUT headquarters is in Latham, near the Albany airport.

UK gov ready to u-turn on passport-ID card

As the UK's ID cards bill charges through Parliament, signs are starting to emerge that the Home Office's dubious packaging plans might be coming apart at the seams. Asked earlier this week to provide a timescale for the addition of fingerprints and iris scans to passports, Immigration Minister Des Browne said a decision had yet to be made, and seemed to leave scope for this never happening.

Airport security will be cracking down on cars with fake dashboard parking permits after a brazen real-estate developer parked his new Porsche at JFK with a bogus ID card ? and then pretended to be a cop when authorities tried to tow it, sources said.Law-enforcement sources said the Port Authority has directed its cops, NYPD traffic agents and Homeland Security personnel patrolling the airports to scrutinize all parking permits extra carefully from now on ? because phony ones can be used by terrorists.

Council debates festival future

Licensing officials are due to decide on Monday evening if the Glastonbury music festival will go ahead.Although the 2004 event was pronounced largely a success, there were some breaches of noise regulations.Organisers say that will not be a problem this year and have also introduced photo ID cards with tickets to try to stop ticket touts.It was thought a compromise might be reached whereby music continues through the night but at reduced noise levels.

No devil in ID cards, says Russian church

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Alexis II, assured his flock that new identification documents to be introduced in Russia would not contain the ?sign of the antichrist? despite scare-mongering rumours to the contrary, ITAR-TASS reported.Speaking ahead of a meeting of clerics in Moscow, he acknowledged plans to introduce new passports and other identification documents that employ new technologies including digital fingerprints and photographs of the iris of the holder?s eye.
