Wilson government rejected ID cards
Harold Wilson's Labour government rejected the introduction of identity cards, dismissing them as "extremely expensive and largely ineffective" in combating IRA terrorism, according to official files made public.In November 1974 Wilson was under pressure to act after the Birmingham pub bombings - one of the worst atrocities of the Troubles - at the end of another year of appalling terrorist violence.Twenty-one people were killed and more than 160 injured after bombs ripped through two city centre pubs - the Mulberry Bush and the Tavern in the Town.

Anger at ID cards plan
A pensioners' leader has criticised plans to introduce ID cards, claiming the measures would make everyone a criminal.The controversial government proposal has passed the first stage in the Commons despite a significant number of MPs failing to vote.But Coventry and Warwickshire British Pensioners and Trade Union Action Association has already given the scheme the thumbs down.Branch secretary Alan Wilkins, aged 68, said: "It's going to cost a fortune and we don't even believe ID cards are going to be useful in this situation."It's compulsory to carry ID cards in Spain and Turkey but it didn't stop bombings there.

County to give photo ID cards to seniors
The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office will issue Ident-Adult emergency photo identification cards to seniors during the birthday party held at the Middletown Senior Center on Jan. 20. The program starts at 12:30 p.m. with a presentation about safety travel tips for seniors and includes a film about security checks at airports.This free event is open to registered members of the Middletown Senior Center, 900 Leonardville Road and any Middletown resident wishing to come in to register.

Granholm signs bills targeting ID theft
Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a package of bills Tuesday designed to better protect consumers from identity theft, one of the fastest-growing crimes in the country.The laws, which take effect in March, bar retailers from displaying more than the last four digits of a credit card account number on a sales receipt or mailing. Also, employers cannot print Social Security numbers on an ID badge or card, and victims of identity theft have the right to obtain a police report.

National IDs urged
Netherland said, his office is constantly investigating cases of people using computers and color copiers to create increasingly sophisticated copies of visas, visa stamps, birth certificates, social security cards and other documents. There have been about 12 arrests locally during the last year in such cases.As for what a national biometrics ID card system. could do to prevent such incidents, Netherland said it would help - maybe."It's supposed to be infallible, but these folks get increasingly sophisticated. But as they adapt, we'll adapt."

Some retailers require photo ID for returns
With the holiday season winding down, a trip to the merchandise return counter is inevitable for many people. Just be sure to bring along your receipt -- and, in some cases, a photo ID card, too. Some retailers have begun implementing stricter return policies that require photo identification -- such as a driver's license -- to complete the return, even if the returner has a receipt and price tags are still on the item.The reason? Fraud. According to the National Retail Federation, returns of used or stolen merchandise are costing the industry $16 billion annually.Express, K.B. Toys, Sports Authority and Guess, among others, now require photo IDs for returns.

Huge ID Fee Increase For Illinois Residents
Illinois residents who want to avoid paying higher fees may want to head to the secretary of state's office this week.Starting January First, the price of a state-issued ID card increases from $4 to $20. And changing an address on an ID card will set you back $10, instead of the current $2.(The cards will remain free for the disabled, those over 65 and anyone living in veterans homes or hospitals.)The fee increases were approved earlier this year as part of efforts to raise

Stolen laptop a problem for aide to governor
It wasn't just anyone's laptop.Burglars who targeted a midtown house in August made off with the Dell laptop belonging to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's press secretary, leaving police on the hunt for her computer and the culprits.Four months later, no one has been arrested for the burglary, although court documents point to prime suspects.Three people were charged in August in connection with some of press secretary Margita Thompson's missing property, including ID badges and a Prada bag.Thompson told a reporter that the laptop was for personal use, but in a letter to a judge, she expressed concern about the people with whom she works.
