One million Beijingers to face problems as ID cards expire
More than one million citizens in Beijing, China's capital, may encounter a "no identification" situation as their first-generation ID cards are set to expire by New Year's Day and a second-generation card has yet to be applied for. The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, which is in charge of distributing the second-generation ID cards in the city,has decided to introduce a series of measures to help achieve smooth and efficient card exchange transactions for these people.These measures include offering makeshift second-generation cards and conducting ID card distribution services on weekends andworkday evenings, the bureau said.

'ID cards an echo of Big Brother'
A READING East parliamentary hopeful yesterday (Wednesday Dec 22) accused the government of playing on the nation's fears to prove the need for identity cards.An under-populated House of Commons this week gave safe passage to the Identity Cards Bill at its second reading.The card will hold biometric information including face and eye recognition, and fingerprints.But Rex Hora, who will fight Reading East as an independent at the next general election, accused the government of turning into George Orwell's Big Brother from 1984.

Pacific Power is warning customers to beware of potential scams by individuals claiming to be from the utility.To help residents spot possible ripoffs, company officials say that genuine Pacific Power employees wear ID badges in the field and all official vehicles are marked with the company's name or logo.

ID card opposition crumbles
Opposition to the government's ID card scheme was ruthlessly swept aside in the first crucial vote in the House of Commons last night, with MPs voting almost four-to-one in favour of the controversial Bill.Backbench MPs from all parties had threatened to try and derail the government's controversial ID card plans at the first reading of the Bill in the House of Commons. New Home Secretary Charles Clarke continued the hard line of his predecessor David Blunkett and dismissed the "Big Brother" claims of opponents of the scheme.

Driver's License Rules in Intel Law Spark Outrage
A bipartisan group of senators, representatives, and members of the 9/11 Commission flanked President Bush Friday at his signing of sweeping intelligence reform legislation. But an equally diverse collection of citizens' groups criticized what they saw as the potential for government oppression and invasions of privacy codified in the new law.Babka warned that a national ID card system. would have an inherently high potential for abuse, in part because the new law designates appointed officials, rather than elected representatives, to set the standards.

Scotland in line for £600m ID card boost
SCOTLAND is set to benefit to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds of extra cash as a result of the scheme to introduce ID cards.Rules on government funding mean the Scottish Executive could receive as much as an extra £60m per year as part of the package of funding to bring in the controversial cards across the UK.The increase is because of the Barnett formula which governs how different departments across the UK receive cash. When a UK department receives an increase in funds, the Scottish Executive stands to receive extra money amounting to about a 10th of the new cash which the UK department gets.
