Lobbyists fuming over new ID rule
Annapolis lobbyists will meet Tuesday to discuss how to fight a new regulation that bars them from getting state-issued identification cards allowing them unfettered access to Maryland's halls of power. If the rule stands, lobbyists who reap six-figure salaries will have to stand in line with tourists, pass through metal detectors and wear visitors' nametags around the State House.About 30,000 people, including 327 lobbyists, have ID badges. There are 755 registered lobbyists in Maryland.

Clarke vows to press on with ID cards
Charles Clarke made clear his commitment yesterday to carry through David Blunkett's identity card scheme. The new home secretary said he had supported the plans when his predecessor had argued for them in cabinet, and he continued to support them now."ID cards are a means to creating a more secure society," Mr Clarke said yesterday, dismissing Liberal Democrat calls to delay next Monday's second reading of the legislation in the Commons.

One last chance for ID card sanity
As the deputy under-secretary at the Home Office surreptitiously brushes the dog hairs from the welcome mat, we have one final and unexpected chance to call for sanity over national ID cards. The new incumbent, Charles Clarke, is known to have harboured many reservations in the past. While he is undoubtedly under orders not to rock the boat in the run-up to the election, that goes both ways. He has a great deal of political leverage in exchange for sparing any further blushes. The arguments against ID cards are threefold: they are expensive, intrusive and ineffective.

Blair Challenged on Id Cards
Compulsory ID cards will not be in force for several years, giving the Government time to iron out any practical problems, the Prime Minister said today.Tony Blair also argued in the Commons that as biometric technology would have to be used for passports, it made sense to use it for ID cards as well.Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy had challenged Mr Blair at question time over his failure to ban companies associated with previous computer fiascos such as at the Child Support Agency from running the ID card system.

Letter: Private security guard at school
I spoke before the Town Council on Dec. 6 stating my views about security at the high school.I favor a private security guard firm 24 hours a day and seven days a week, with video cameras and videotapes or discs. For visitors, there should be a walk through a metal detector, and then they can be checked in after showing IDs, logging on the computer as to where they are going, and being given name labels. There should be a comprehensive ID card system for everyone from cleaners, students, teachers, administrators, the superintendent of schools, and all town officials entering the building.

Legal chief warns over ID cards
The introduction of identity cards may heighten the risk of terrorism by alienating young Asian men and driving them into the arms of extremists, the new chairman of the Bar Council has warned. Guy Mansfield QC also warned against Home Secretary David Blunkett's plans for trials without juries for terror suspects. Trial by jury is an essential part of Britain's democratic liberty, and abandoning it amounted to giving in to terrorists, he suggested.

High-Tech Tix For Glasto?
Glastonbury Festival owner Michael Eavis reported strong support for his idea of issuing festival-goers photo ID cards instead of tickets for next year's event. He told Pollstar that more than 90 percent of the 600-plus people who'd responded to a BBC Radio One poll were in favor of using the cards as a method of beating the black market traders. He decided to ask fans for their views because he was concerned that some may feel the measure is too oppressive.
