U.S. military worries about ID card losses

U.S. military commanders in Europe are warning that missing or stolen identification cards might be a serious security threat. So far this year, U.S. Army Europe has replaced 9,600 missing or stolen cards, while U.S. Air Forces in Europe has given out about 3,000 replacement cards, Stars and Stripes reported Saturday. Military officials said reissued cards make up about 10 percent of the ID cards handed out every year.

ID cards will hit business, watchdog warns

British businesses will face an extra layer of red tape when ID cards are introduced, according to the boss of the government's own regulation watchdog.David Arculus, chairman of the Better Regulation Task Force (BRTF), believes businesses will be affected by the cards, despite claims from the Home Office that it is not possible to say whether they will feel an impact. He fears "regulatory creep" because the legislation has unclear objectives. The Task Force produced a report in late October which warned that legislation with unclear objectives tends to be interpreted over-zealously by organisations.

Police warning as youngsters use fake ID cards to buy drink

Fake ID cards are being used to buy drink by under-age drinkers in Prestonpans.Police believe the cards are being bought on the internet for as little as £20.In recent months the local community council has heard a catalogue of complaints of unruly youngsters drinking and damaging property.Now shopkeepers in the town and surrounding area have been asked by Lothian and Borders Police to watch out for the fake cards which are being used to buy alcohol.

Talks consider use of ID cards for business

The government is working with the private sector to determine how ID cards for a range of commercial transactions.If adopted, the plan would create a central audit trail of every citizen's major transactions with both government and business.The proposals are revealed in the Regulatory Impact Assessment, a document accompanying the ID cards Bill published this week. It says the Bill allows for the national identity register (NIR) to record when and from whom any checks on the database take place.

ID cards: keep up to date or face fine of £1000

FINES of up to £1000 will be issued to people who fail to tell the government when they move house or change their name after marriage, under new identity card plans.The details emerged as the controversial £3.1bn national ID card system was formally unveiled yesterday.The Identity Cards Bill also revealed it could become compulsory across the UK sooner than thought, despite the Scottish Executive's preference for cards to remain voluntary.

Prime Minister Tony Blair will today give his strong personal backing to David Blunkett?s £3 billion proposals for compulsory identity cards, as a Bill introducing the controversial document is published at Westminster.Mr Blair is expected to use his regular monthly press conference at 10 Downing Street to set out the Government?s case that ID cards will help improve people?s security and enable them to access public services more conveniently.
