THE Government is planning to introduce compulsory ID cards costing £35 or £85 for a passport and ID card together. Reporter Malcolm Duckett went to find out what the people of Solihull thought of the idea."I think its a good idea," said George Powers, aged 78, from Streeton under Fosse. "I think they should tattoo people as well".His wife Margaret, aged 76, agreed: "I don't mind paying £35 for the card. I can't see why any reasonable person with nothing to hide would object."Chris Brooks, aged 43, also gave the idea the thumbs-up: "I'm all for it especially if it keeps illegal immigrants out."

ID cards are going out to every Tulsa Public Schools student, but these are just for their parents to use if their child is missing. It's a new program called Smile Safe Kids, creating a catalog of school pictures that authorities can use to help identify a missing child. News on 6 reporter Emory Bryan has the story. It?s a fall tradition for children all over the country to get school pictures. This year, children will get something extra with that picture; identification card made specifically to help identify a missing child.

Fans support Glastonbury ID cards

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has said he has had strong support for his idea to issue festival-goers with photo ID cards instead of tickets next year.He wants to beat touts after heavy black market trade in recent years.On Wednesday, he said: "The response today has been very, very positive. We have had about 400 emails and I think about 90% are in favour."He had been concerned the measure may have seemed too oppressive and asked for views via the BBC Radio 1 website.

Queen gives biometric ID cards the green light

Legislation for national identity cards and the setting-up of a British version of the FBI were the key planks of the Queen's Speech on Tuesday, which promised "security for all."Both were widely expected to be included in the speech, which sets out the legislative agenda for the upcoming session of the U.K. Parliament. The speech is read by the Queen but written by the government, which will now push both pieces of legislation through Parliament before the next general election.

Security in Freeborn County gets technical.

Federal dollars help make a new law enforcement center a little safer.Recently the Freeborn County Law Enforcement Center installed a new ID card system that allows employees to gain access to secure areas that not everybody is allowed in. It?s something the building didn?t have until now. The best part?it didn?t cost the county one single dollar.

Feds expand testing of ID cards

The government said this past week it dramatically is expanding testing of a high-tech ID system for transportation workers and hopes to have 200,000 people in the program by June.The biometric identification cards being tested by the Transportation Security Administration allow identities to be verified by matching such physical characteristics as fingerprints, handprints or eye scans. The cards will allow seaports, airports, railroads, public transit systems, energy facilities and trucking companies to control access to restricted areas.

Of all the 36 Bills or draft Bills trailed in this week's Queen's Speech, the one that will directly affect the greatest number of people will be David Blunkett's scheme for a national, compulsory identity card scheme.This will be the first time since just after the war that law-abiding citizens will be expected to carry a card that proves they are who they say they are. While it will not be an offence to be without an ID card, in practice no one will be able to drive a car, travel, or do much else unless they have one.
