R-1 board hears ID badge comments

Just minutes after Fox News nationally broadcast a story about Poplar Bluff High School's new policy requiring students to wear identification badges, the issue was raised at Thursday's board meeting by parents and a student opposing the policy."This is one more step in the subtle erosion of any freedoms or liberties left for students ... ," Sophomore Matt Boyers told the board. "I am asking for reconsideration of this policy. I believe that the effort, money, and time spent on this particular project could have been put to better use elsewhere."

Beginning Monday, anyone wanting to buy cigarettes or alcohol at Copps Food Center will be asked for photo identification, regardless of age.?If a customer doesn't have valid photo I.D., regardless of age, they will be told by the checkout operators, "I can't sell you this alcohol or tobacco," said Lynn Guyer, communications director for Milwaukee-based Roundy's Inc., owners of the grocery store at 3415 Custer St.

Students question ID badges

Jay Reed used to just grab his backpack each morning and head off to Eagle Point High School. Now, though, the sophomore has to make sure he has his photo identification badge, which all students must wear on campus."I hate them," Jay said. "This is like prison, but with no cable TV."The badges for students and teachers were instituted this fall as a safety measure so officials could quickly and easily identify people at the school, said Vice Principal Brock Rowley. "The bottom line is student safety," he said. "We want people to feel safe on campus and we want to know who belongs here."

Blunkett: ID cards will protect civil liberties

The Government's plans for a national, compulsory ID cards scheme will create a practical, simple and secure way for ordinary citizens to protect and prove their identity - not a Big Brother-style surveillance tool, the Home Secretary, David Blunkett promised.Mr Blunkett used a speech to the Institute of Public Policy Research to restate the case in favour of a secure national ID cards scheme,which, the Home Office claimed, four out of five citizens support.

Braille ID cards Plea to Stop Bogus Callers

Public authorities should provide Braille on identification cards to safeguard blind people from bogus callers, the Government was told today.Labour?s Jon Trickett (Hemsworth) told the Commons that the ?informed consumer is a safe consumer?.He said more needed to be done as current estimates showed that 15,000 bogus trading cases were reported each year.?The threat of exploitation is particularly acute to the most vulnerable groups in our society,? he added.

Ad attacks national ID card legislation

A liberal-conservative coalition ran a full-page advertisement in The Washington Times Monday protesting the proposed national identification card.The American Civil Liberties Union said it and other organizations are asking the conference committee on intelligence reform to remove the national ID provisions from its final Sept. 11 intelligence reform legislation. The conferees are currently working to reconcile the House and Senate versions of the bill.

One card for travel and payment could become reality in Asia

There could soon be one standard for ID cards to be used throughout Asia -- from Singapore to Japan and even China -- so you won't need to carry multiple cards in future.The One Card-One Asia vision is an ambitious expansion of Singapore's EZ-Link card, a smart contactless card now used not just on Singapore's public transport system, but also the library and even a fast food restaurant.

Smart ID for people born in 1954-55

Identity-card holders who were born in 1954 or 1955 are required to apply for a new Smart ID card from November 29 to January 22.If their ID cards bear the "A" or "***" residential symbol, or their ID cards were issued on or after January 1, 1999, and bear the "R" residential symbol, they only need to bring their existing ID cards.Other eligible applicants should bring their travel documents showing their current residential status in Hong Kong, in addition to their existing ID cards.
