A group of parents and their children in Missouri are up in arms over a new policy at a high school requiring students and staff to wear identification badges.The school officials say it's a security measure, allowing them to be able to see at a distance who belongs in the building and who does not.The badges are identical to the ones the students have always been required to carry as identification and to check out library books, the only difference is they now have to wear them during school hours when they are on the campus.

Veterans' new ID cards thwart identity theft

With identity theft as the major fraud reported by Americans in 2003, the Department of Veterans Affairs has designed a new identity card for veterans to safeguard confidential information."The new identification card ensures veterans' personal information is protected," said Sec-retary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. "It also helps prevent the theft of important benefits and services from veterans that they earned by their service to our country."

Free Child ID cards to be available at City Hall

Free child identification cards will be available in the lobby of Marion City Hall from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.Members of the Marion Citizen Police Academy Alumni also will be handing out the cards for children 15 years old and younger in the same place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 27 and Dec. 11. The first card with the child's photo, name and emergency contact information is free. Duplicates cost $1. Each child must be accompanied by an adult.

City Hall toughens rule that workers wear a badge

Like a lot of organizations worried about security after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Boston city officials decided that employees should wear identification badges stamped with their photo and the building where they work. It's taken three years for authorities to get serious about it. But now they're very, very serious.A memo to employees warns that beginning this week, they must wear ID badges in plain view while at work. Failure to comply means firm punishment. Anyone caught once or twice without their ID will receive counseling from their supervisor. A fourth violation gets a suspension from work. Eight offenses and you're fired.

Men show fake IDs at airport, denied boarding

Two men who presented fake identification at the Pitkin County Airport were stopped from boarding a United Express plane to Denver Monday, but they left the area before they could be questioned.The men are described as Latino, in their 20s and of average height and weight. According to airport officials, the men were trying to board the 8:20 a.m. flight when the ticketing agent discovered their ID cards were falsified.

OSU replaces ID card for students and staff

Oregon State University is replacing identification cards for students and employees. Previous cards used Social Security numbers as identification; the new cards will use a generated number.All OSU students, faculty and staff enrolled or employed previous to fall term will receive new ID cards.

ID cards identify burglary suspects

Two Pennington County men learned what would seem to be an obvious lesson late last week: When going into a place where you don't belong, don't leave your identification card behind.Stemming from two separate offenses occurring late Thursday night or early Friday morning, two men were charged with burglary and made their initial appearances Monday morning in 7th Circuit Court.In both cases, law officers reported finding a suspect's identification card at the scene of the incident.
