Government says no plans for ID card

There were no plans to introduce an Australia Card-style national identification system to tackle identity fraud, the government said. A spokesman for Justice Minister Chris Ellison said the government acknowledged identity crime was a growing problem and had passed laws earlier this year to outlaw the possession of credit card skimming equipment.

You already need your photo ID to buy booze or cigarettes and now you?ll need it to rent or buy certain video and computer games.Canadian retailers and entertainment software makers Thursday were to announce a broad initiative aimed at curbing children?s access to violent and age-restricted games, including asking customers to produce photographic identification in some cases.

The UK Parliament's Houses of Commons and Lords aim to plug the holes in their security with an ID card-based system, which should last them until 2010.A tender published last week indicates that the Palace of Westminster is seeking to replace perimeter and internal security equipment. It's likely to need to replace electronic access doors, but this will depend on reviews currently underway. It's hoped that protesters and terrorists will be kept out by the new system.
