Coach IDs good idea, but parents have a role in youth safety, too Cities are wise to take pro-active measures, making sure children are safe, no matter how costly or inconvenient. And they
are right to worry about potential lawsuits should a child be molested by a city volunteer. It's just the world we live in. South Florida municipalities now requiring ID badges include Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Sunrise, Lauderdale Lakes, Riviera Beach, West Palm Beach and Tamarac. In Hollywood, which started the practice two years ago, park employees also patrol the fields to make sure people working with children wear the badges. Wellington requires only background checks. State Sen. Jeremy Ring, D-Parkland, has proposed a bill requiring all youths sports volunteers to be fingerprinted. And the National Recreation and Park Association runs Social Security numbers through criminal background databases. Full Article fromSun-sentinel.com.

Hospital staff badges spread infection: study
The study, led by Dr Rhonda Stewart from the Monash Medical Centre, says identity badges and especially the cords which they
hang from, can harbour antibiotic resistant bacteria. In the Medical Journal of Australia the researchers report that that the badges and security cards are worn for long periods without cleaning. They recommend that disinfection of ID badges be added to the rigorous hand cleaning regime which has been shown to be a key way of halting the spread of infections in hospitals. PRESS RELEASE - THE NEW REGISTRATION PROCESS BEGINS
Kindly note that the Order is relevant to previously registered persons only. However, during the period identified, the
registration of new voters will continue as usual. It is also important to note that although registration and confirmation of registration will take place, no national ID cards will actually be issued until the regulations governing the issuance of the ID cards are put in place and are fully ventilated in the public domain early in 2008. Johnson students soon must wear photo IDs
Kemp said the ID program has several purposes, including pride through identifying each grade level by a
different colored stripe. "It breaks the four-year process of getting to the diploma down to four 10-month, manageable goals, he said. Gil Espinoza, a 16-year-old Johnson sophomore, said the new IDs will require an adjustment period. "Now you?re going to have to wake up every morning and (consider) where?s my new ID card," he said. Still, he believes the increased security measure is worth the new worry. "Last year, I know a lot of people who just came into the school, into the gym or something, and just walked around," Espinoza said. Full Article fromGainesvilletimes.com.

Gene ID cards issued to help Chinese street children find parents
XI'AN, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- With specially-made ID cards containing their genetic information, 14
street children in northwest China's Shaanxi Province are likely to find their own biological parents sooner. Medical workers from the Fourth Military Medical University of Chinese People's Liberation Army have issued 14 gene ID cards, the first such cards in Shaanxi Province, to the children accommodated in government-sponsored relief center in the provincial capital of Xi'an. "I know my parents will come to me soon and take me home," said Ren Weiwei, while holding his blue color gene ID card. Full Article fromNews.xinhuanet.com.

'Time-honoured' medical practice questioned
"That's a time-honoured way of gathering that new technology and new skills," Wedge said.
"Usually the surgeons would use their discretion as to whether or not anyone is in the operating room who doesn't need to be." But medical ethicists and privacy experts are starting to look at taking that discretion away from surgeons. This fall, the biggest health authority in British Columbia introduced sweeping new rules about how close company representatives can get to patients. Among the new rules are a requirement for company representatives to wear ID badges in hospitals and health clinics, and they may no longer scrub in for surgeries. Full Article fromCbc.ca.

We have everything to fear from ID cards
We are born free and have the right to decide what freedom means, each for ourselves, and to have control over our outward
existence, yet that will no longer be the case if we agree to identity cards. Britain is already the most self-watching country in the world, with the largest network of security cameras; a new study suggests we are now every bit as poor at protecting privacy as Russia, China and America. But surveillance cameras and lost data will prove minuscule problems next to ID cards, which will obliterate the fundamental right to walk around in society as an unknown.
