Gyms and Health Clubs

These days, when you sign up for a gym membership, it's almost guaranteed that you'll receive a member card. The card will contain information such as your name, member ID number, and quite possibly your photo. Even if your photo isn't printed on the card, many gyms will still take your digital mug shot and store it in a database. That way, when your gym card is scanned, the saved image will appear on a computer screen and the worker can verify your identity. This helps to ensure that nonmembers aren't able to sneak in with someone else's card.

Typically, a gym or health club card will contain a bar code or magnetic stripe. When the card is scanned, not only is your identity verified, but the gym can even track how often you're using the facility. This can be an extremely helpful tool for gyms trying to keep members onboard, as the system can flag members who are going long periods of time between visits to the club.

Additionally, some gyms choose to up the sophistication level of their card programs by storing member profiles within a card's magnetic strip, and integrated them with access control systems.
