Identification Badges
Photo IdentificationWhen most people think of photo identification, the first thing that comes to mind is their driver’s license. In today’s high-security world, however, it has become increasingly common for photo ID cards to apply to much more than one’s ability to get behind the wheel. A wide assortment of groups and organizations ranging from the military to schools and health clubs are all finding applicable uses for photo identification cards and systems. Photo IDs in SchoolsLet’s explore the use of ID cards in schools for example. When I was coming up through the educational system, I received my first student photo ID in college. The card was used for more than just a simple form of personal identification. A magnetic stripe on the card stored my meal plan information so I could use it in the dining hall. Additionally, I was able to use the card to check out books in the library, and even to make photo copies. Such functionality, while effective and impressive, pales in comparison to what today’s student ID cards are capable of. Many schools now issue student IDs with points programs that can be managed by students and parents online. These programs are often used for transactions both on and off campus. In a sense, the student ID can act as a debit card. There are also examples of schools that integrate their ID cards with access control systems. And photo IDs are not just for colleges and universities anymore. As part of a larger effort to enhance school security, many high schools, middle schools, and even elementary schools are now requiring students, faculty, staff and visitors to wear photo ID badges at all times while on school grounds. Hospital ID BadgesIn the healthcare industry, photo identification plays a significant role. In most hospitals doctors, nurses and staff are required to wear photo IDs. These badges are often color-coded to designate what department each worker belongs to, and give patients peace of mind knowing that they are being attended to by the appropriate people. It’s also common for hospitals to require visitors to wear photo IDs. Again, this helps in restricted access to only those who actual belong, or have a right to be, in the facility. Employee ID CardsEven in our everyday workplaces it’s becoming increasingly common for employers to issue photo IDs to workers. These can range from simple photo identification cards to complex multifunctional cards that operate with access control systems, securing access to buildings as well as company computers and computer networks. These examples offer only a small sampling of the different uses for photo identification cards and multi-functional ID badges.
