Multifunctional Plastic Cards

There are a variety of options when printing plastic ID cards. Exciting features such as smart card and proximity card technology are now commonly used by companies and organizations large and small. Examples of security options for plastic cards include:

Magnetic Stripe Encoding

Cards with magnetic stripe encoding are used for everything from access control to financial transactions. (Think about how student IDs can be linked to meal plans for example.) Special plastic cards with a black or brown magnetic stripe are used to produce this type of ID card. Magnetic resin particles form the stripe. The darker the stripe, the harder it is to encode and erase information, and thus the more secure the card is. These cards have a high coercivity level. Lower coercivity cards feature a lighter brown magnetic stripe. Credit and debit cards are obvious examples of high coercivity cards, due to the level of security such cards demand. Lower coercivity cards could include library cards and various membership cards.

Proximity Card Technology

A proximity card contains an embedded antenna which transmits signals detectable by proximity readers when the card is held within a certain range. These cards are also referred to as radio frequency identification (RFID) cards. They are commonly used for access control purposes. Many companies use them to control access to buildings and authorized areas within a facility. Special RFID plastic cards are required when incorporating proximity technology. HID is one of the leading manufacturers of such cards.

Smart Card Encoding

Smart cards utilize embedded smart chips in order to store and process significant amounts of information, allowing for a wide array of functionality. Smart cards are popular for controlling access to buildings and computer networks, payment and ticketing applications such as those used for mass transit, secure personal identification, and much more. They come in both contact and contactless form. A contactless smart card uses smart chip and RFID technology. The PVC cards used for this sort of technology are about the size of a credit card and follow the ID-1 format standard measuring 85.60 mm by 53.98 mm.
