ID Badge Software

Whether you're using ID badge software alone or with a card printer, it's an essential component of any photo ID system. But ID badge software can be used for much more than designing ID cards. Many types of ID card software offer encoding so that you won't need to purchase an external encoder with your card printer. EPISuite offers ID badge software that doesn't require you to own a card printer; instead, you can send your print jobs to an external EPIWeb printing center to have your cards printed for you.

Other ID badge software programs can help you with market research, entry and exit point tracking, employee or student database management and more! Special visitor management software works well for organizations that need to keep detailed records of everyone that enters their facilities. Depending on which software version you choose, you can sort your cardholders, manage visitors and keep detailed records of who is located at a certain site at any given time. Some programs also offer options that allow you to design cards at an external card creation station (with and without print capability).

Basic features you should look for in any ID badge software:

  • WYSIWYG visual editor. It can be frustrating to think you're finished designing an ID card, hit "print preview" and find out that you must re-align the whole thing. WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) format ensures that your cards will turn out exactly how they look as you're designing them.
  • TWAIN image import. Make sure that you're not limited when you're trying to import a photo. TWAIN compatibility is absolutely necessary.
  • Adequate database space or external database connectivity. In some versions of ID badge creation software, database records are limited. Make sure that the software you choose either connects to an external database like MS Excel or dBase, or it contains adequate space for all the people in your organization.
  • Customization. If you want a simple design, templates can help. But if you want a custom design for security purposes, make sure it's possible with the software you choose. Not all software programs allow for complete customization.
  • Ghosting and opacity effects. Not completely essential, but very valuable if you plan to incorporate watermarks. A watermark makes it more difficult to forge your cards, and it makes it easy for your security guards to verify or deny card authenticity.
