Not only does this ensure that your background will cover the entire surface of the card, it also prevents alteration, since any attempt to peel the film away from the card's surface will ruin the image. And while embedded smart chips can cause a card's surface to be uneven, that won't affect the print quality like it sometimes does with direct-to-card printers, since the HDP5000's printhead never touches the card surface.
