How to Maintain Optimum Card Printer Performance

Simple, routine maintenance can help keep your ID card printer printing professional, high-quality ID cards years and years after its purchase.  Card printer maintenance is easy and it takes just minutes of your time to keep ID cards free from marring, streaks, discoloration and jamming.

Easy Ways to Make Your Card Printer Last

  • Use only the recommended ribbon and cards for your card printer. Using discounted off-brand cards and ribbons may work in the short term, but the quality of both the printed cards and print heads can decline over time.
  • Clean the printer regularly when recommended.  It's usually a good idea to clean the printer every time the ribbon is changed. Some printers have integrated cleaning rollers in with the printer ribbon, but these printers should still be thoroughly cleaned with the same frequency as other printers.

  • Make sure the ribbons and cleaning kits are installed correctly. A cartridge or spool that is slightly out of calibration may cause streaking, discolored cards, or card jams.
  • Don't just clean the print heads. Use a can of compressed air to dislodge any dust or debris from any other parts of the printer when performing normal cleaning. Freeing up dust from printer components ensures that cards will move freely without jamming, and printed cards will not suffer from marring and streaks that can happen from debris on printing mechanisms.
