Reverse transfer (also called retransfer) ID card printers use a unique printing process to create high quality, high definition, more durable ID cards with vibrant colors and fine image details.

How does Reverse Transfer Printing Work?

Reverse transfer printing starts with a card printer, a printer ribbon, and clear transfer film. To print, your printer heats up the printhead and prints the color or monochrome design on the clear transfer film. That film, with your design, is then fused onto the card.

What are the benefits of reverse transfer printing?

  • Card design is more durable, due to the clear film, than a dye sublimation printer’s card
  • Ability to print on cards with uneven surfaces, like smart chip cards, because the printhead never comes into contact with the card
  • Increased print quality
  • True over-the-edge printing
