Wisconsin Republicans proposed changes to a bill that would allow college students to use school ID cards as official identification at the polls.

The proposal requires that a card be from an accredited university of college and include a photo, date of birth, current address, signature and expiration date within four years. This would ensure that a student ID card meets the same standards as a state-issued ID card.

Accepting student ID cards may encourage eligible students to vote by making it easier for them to prove their identity. Unfortunately, some schools in Wisconsin and around the country are not providing students with secure ID cards that don't meet the proposed standards. This point of contention between the GOP and Democrats might be the deal breaker, but even if the bill doesn’t pass now, it may pave the way for future passing. Increasingly, colleges and universities are updating their card programs to feature convenient and secure cards that can be used for a variety of applications around campus and community.
