Students and staff at American University may soon be able to ride DC trains and buses using their school ID cards. A pilot program is in place to test American University student IDs that are compatible with the SmarTrip tap-and-enter technology currently used for Washington DC Metro riders.
The transition is made easier because the school's ID cards are already compatible with DC Metro's smart card readers. Should the program come to fruition after testing, students and staff will simply have to tap their university ID cards against those readers when entering Metro stations or boarding buses. The fare will automatically be deducted from the card.
It all comes down to convenience. Students and faculty will only have to worry about loading funds onto a single card, and can use that ID for all its existing school-related functions, as well as transit riding, without having to worry about a separate Metro pass.
