University ID cards often perform a variety of functions beyond simple identification. One of the more common applications is integration with meal plans and cashless payment. Indiana State University is just one of many schools now providing students with the ability to use their school ID cards for not only dining hall meals, but also off-campus feasting.
The Indiana State Sycamore ID card carries "Blue Bucks" which can be used for purchases at various off-campus businesses. It gives students more opportunities to use their IDs for purchases, and encourages more interaction between students and businesses located close to campus. Students can also suggest new businesses to be added to the program, if their favorites aren't currently involved.
The Blue Bucks program is still in its infancy, so sign up still has to take place in person. Eventually the program will allow users to sign up, check their balance, and add funds online.
