Utah public transit riders are being introduced to a new fare system. The Utah Transit Authority is putting a new smart card system in place after completing tests on the electronic fare collection system. Electronic readers are positioned at the entrances to buses, train cars and light rail cars. The new smart cards are passed over the reader, eliminating the need for cash.
Riders are using their smart fare cards both when they enter and exit the varying forms of public transit. This provides the UTA with useful data about the kinds of trips that people are making within the transit system. Contactless credit and debit cards can also be used with the electronic card readers. Riders can still pay with cash, but transit officials are expecting that this form of payment will soon be phased out with the introduction of the smart cards.
The new smart card system was fist tested in December 2006 on the ski bus service. Electronic fare collection was put into place on 41 buses that take skiers and ski resort employees to ski resorts during the ski season. Now, a new group of riders is benefiting from the implementation of the program. Companies can sponsor annual passes for their employees called Eco Passes, and schools are issuing passes to their students called Ed Passes. Riders belonging to these two groups can use the public transit system for free.
The implementation of the new smart card system is just the first step in a multi-phase project. In the future, UTA is looking to add an online feature where people can track their travel history through the transit authority website. The UTA is looking at rolling out new features of the system in late 2009 or 2010, allowing riders to buy prepaid passes or gift cards ahead of time.
