Riders of Ottawa's OC Transpo system could be using smart cards for fare payment by 2010 if a similar project called "PrestoCard" goes smoothly in Toronto. The PrestoCard will launch in September. Public transit riders will carry a single smart card that can be loaded up with dollars from their home computers. Each card contains a special chip. When the cardholder boards the bus or train, the card is tapped against a reader that automatically deducts the fare.
The Ottawa smart card program will be integrated with Para Transpo along with the public transit network in Gatineau. One of the benefits of smart cards for fare payment is they can be set up to work across multiple transit systems. The other obvious benefits are that they eliminate the need to carry change or paper tickets, and also bring an end to the problem of long lines for renewing transit passes each month. They also help to cut operating costs since a single card can be used over and over, which means the transit system doesn't need to print new passes for each rider every time their old pass runs out. Ottawa is also planning on integrating its transit smart card with parking fare payments at transit stations.
