Alabama's Fort Payne Middle School is gearing up to install a new visitor management system that that can instantly run background checks on all visitors, and print out temporary photo ID badges. The school received a grant to acquire the system, which is part of a committed effort to increase school security.
With the new system, when a visitor arrives at the school, rather than simply signing in on a notepad, their information will be entered into a computer and a photo ID badge will be printed on the spot. The system also checks the visitor's info against a National Database in order to immediately identify those with a criminal background. If there's a match with a convicted sex offender, for instance, an alert is sent to the school's principal, and the local police.
Along with the visitor management system, the middle school is also planning on installing video surveillance cameras for added security. Both systems should be in place by the start of the new school year this fall.
