At a conference to discuss school violence, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller told a group of educators around the state the straight truth - violence is curbed through being prepared.

Accompanied by a series of slide shows and with plenty of examples of how school safety has failed, Miller explained that establishing a rigorous security program in advance - one that includes ID cards for every educator, visitor and student at a particular school - is an effective way to curb the possibility of violence.

Miller told educators of his shock over the lack of oversight when it came to simple security measures like locking school doors and requiring ID badges to be worn at all times, saying that accepting simple rules and enforcing them consistently can make a huge difference when it comes to security a school during a crisis.
